Waterfall tours

Waterfall tours from the Gold Coast

The best waterfalls are inland, toward Liberia, about an hour to an hour and a half from the coast. It's a full day out, and you watch the dry coast turn into green forest on the way.

Most falls sit on private land or need a guide because of the terrain, so visits run as guided tours with transport, a local guide and entry included.

What to expect

How the day usually goes

  • Early pickup

Pickup is usually between 7 and 8 in the morning, then about an hour or more inland toward Liberia.

  • The walk in

The last stretch is smaller roads or trails. Getting to the falls can mean a short hike, a river crossing or guided entry through private land.

  • At the falls

Time to swim where it's safe, relax and look around before heading to the next stop or back to the coast.

  • Add-ons

Many tours pair the falls with river tubing, rafting or volcanic mud baths, depending on where you go and the conditions that day.

Best time to go

It all depends on the rain

More rain means bigger falls, but rivers can rise fast. We only book guided trips, and the guide always makes the call.

Local tip: bring a change of clothes in a dry bag. You'll be wet from swimming, and it's a long ride back to the coast.

  • Dry season, December to April

The most stable conditions and the safest river levels. The falls are smaller but still worth the trip.

  • Early green season, May to July

Everything turns green and the falls get stronger. Usually still very manageable.

  • Peak rain, August to November

Some falls become unsafe or close because of high rivers. We'll tell you honestly what's running before you book.

The inland forests and river corridors hold wildlife you don't often see on the coast: monkeys, birds and reptiles.

  • Safety

Expect uneven ground and short hikes, and follow your guide around rivers and pools. Conditions can change quickly.

  • Who it suits

Nature and wildlife lovers, groups who want adventure and a swim in one day, and anyone ready to see a different side of Costa Rica.
