Catalina Islands diving
Dive the Catalinas
The Catalina Islands sit just off the Gold Coast, a short boat ride from Playa Flamingo and Potrero, and they’re the main dive spot around here. Think rocky reefs, big schools of fish, rays and turtles, with manta rays showing up in some months.
Dive boats leave from Flamingo and Potrero, a few minutes from our homes, so there's no long transfer before you gear up.
New or certified
Two ways to dive
Discover Scuba
A short lesson and some practice in shallow water, then a guided dive with an instructor right beside you. No certification needed.
Two-tank fun dives
Bring your card and join a morning trip to the Catalinas. Want to get certified while you’re here? Open Water and Advanced courses are an option too.
What to expect
A morning on the water
Early start
Boats usually leave around 7 or 8 in the morning, when the sea tends to be calmest.
Two dives
Two guided dives at different sites, with a surface break, water and snacks in between.
Back by lunch
You’re usually on land again by early afternoon, with the rest of the day free.
Good to know
Before you dive
We work with a few dive shops, and each runs things a little differently. Here’s what’s true for most trips.
Best season
You can dive here all year. The water can cool off from about December to May, when a 3mm wetsuit helps. On a good day visibility reaches around 75 feet.
What’s included
Gear, a guide and the boat are usually included, plus water and snacks. Bring your own mask or computer if you prefer yours.
Bat Islands
Experienced divers can ask about the Bat Islands further north, known for bull sharks. Those trips are seasonal and for advanced divers only.
Flying home
Leave about a day between your last dive and your flight.
